FAYETTEVILLE — North Carolina's oldest militia unit has honored four soldiers who fought in the War of 1812 as part of a bicentennial commemoration.

The Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry held a dedication Saturday for four soldiers who fought in America's second war with Great Britain.

Their graves were marked with a small brass star with the words "War of 1812."

Light Infantry Maj. Bruce Daws says they represent everyone who fought in the second war for independence.

Those honored were Brig. Gen. Thomas Davis, Lt. John Eccles, Sgt. John Huske II; and Militiaman John Powers. They were deployed to Wilmington to help protect the town from British naval assaults.

Attendees included representatives of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Office of Army Reserve History.
