Rocky Mount High graduate Brian Goodwin was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, after being waived by the Kansas City Royals on Monday.

Goodwin, 28, is expected to join the Angels’ 25-man roster, and will compete for playing time in an outfield that includes Mike Trout, Kole Calhoun and Peter Bourjos. Justin Upton, another member of the Angels’ outfield, started the season on the injured list.

The former Gryphon batted .266 last season in 101 at-bats for the Royals, who acquired him via a midseason trade, but finished this past spring training with just five hits in 43 at-bats.
