Rocky Mount police arrested a man Monday morning in connection with the weekend stabbing of his estranged wife and three children in Raleigh.

Carl Barkley, 54, was arrested Monday morning at Nash UNC Health Care, Wake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Eric Curry told the Telegram. Barkley had checked himself into the facilities at Nash UNC Health Care, Curry said. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office asked the help of the Rocky Mount Police Department in arresting Barkley and watching him until he could be transported to Wake County.

On Sunday, Barkley allegedly stabbed his wife, who was 53, and his three children, ages 23, 22 and 16.

Deputies arrived about 10 p.m. Sunday at the 5900 block of Gamble Drive in the Raleigh area in answer to call about a reported stabbing. They arrived to find the 22-year-old victim at a residence other than his own on the 5900 block of Gamble where the victim had sought help.

The other three victims made their way to a nearby home on the 2900 block of Franks Drive. All the victims were sent for treatment at a nearby hospital and deputies reportedly recovered the weapon used in the attack.

The 53-year-old and 23-year-old victims are now in stable condition, while the younger two victims are in critical condition, Curry said.

Barkley, a registered sex offender whose address is listed in Rich Square, had fled the scene. He was convicted in 2001 of indecent liberties with a 13-year-old when he was 35. Barkley reportedly served two years in prison for that offense.

After his arrest in Nash County, Barkley was transported to Wake County where he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was jailed without bond in the Wake County Detention Center.
