City and county authorities say they teamed up last week to disrupt drug sales and deter acts of violence in Rocky Mount.

Officers and deputies made 21 arrests and seized four firearms, 13.85 grams of crack cocaine, 1.5 grams of powder cocaine and two grams of marijuana during a one-day joint operation of the Rocky Mount Police Department and the Nash County Sheriff’s Office dubbed Operation Summer Drought.

The operation began with the simultaneous execution of locating violent offenders and serving outstanding warrants on suspects responsible for narcotics sales, said Sgt. Brad Summerlin in a press release dated Friday and released by the city’s communication office at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

“It is amazing what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together,” said Rocky Mount Police Chief George Robinson. “I just want to commend the officers of the RMPD and the members of the NCSO for their hard work and dedication.”

Capt. Todd Wells of the Sheriff’s Office echoed the chief’s thoughts.

“The Nash County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to have worked with Rocky Mount Police Department with this operation,” Wells said. “I can assure the Nash County citizens that the Sheriff’s Office and the Rocky Mount Police Department are dedicated to doing our best to rid our communities of illegal narcotics.”

Since January, there have been more than 50 Nash County residents who have died from heroin-related incidents. It is imperative that city and county law enforcement agencies continue their partnership and use federal, state and local resources to combat gangs, guns and drugs, Wells said.
