A suspect in the weekend armed robbery and theft of a van in the Twin Counties is at large after he inadvertently was let go from a hospital in Pitt County, according to a Rocky Mount police spokesman.

Montrell Lamont Whitaker, 24, was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for treatment and somehow was released without police being notified, Sgt. Brad Summerlin told the Telegram on Tuesday in providing an update about the case.

Whitaker will be facing charges in connection with the robbery and theft, which police have said occurred on the Nash County side of Rocky Mount and in the northern part of the city. Police said the van crashed in rural Edgecombe County after the driver allegedly tried to escape pursuing law enforcement officers.

The crash resulted in the death of one of the people in the van, Ramello Jordan Colon, 23, Summerlin said.

The case can be traced back to about 9:51 p.m. on Friday, when officers investigated a robbery of a person in the 800 block of Jeffreys Road in the Northgreen area.

Police said three armed suspects took the person’s van. They said officers located the van on North Wesleyan Boulevard and attempted to halt the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop.

Police said the pursuit ended in the 5000 block of Battleboro-Leggett Road.

Whitaker is wanted for armed robbery, breaking and entering a motor vehicle and felony fleeing/eluding arrest, Summerlin said.

The identities of the others who were in the van are pending the outcome of the investigation, Summerlin said.
