A man was found shot dead this week in a rural area of Edgecombe County and the Edgecombe Sheriff's Office is treating the case as the first homicide in the county’s jurisdiction in 2019.

The body of Jamarcus Sellers was discovered by deputies at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday in a wooded area near the intersection of Davistown-Mercer and Jenkins Farm roads southeast of Rocky Mount and northwest of Pinetops.

Lt. E.W. Muse of the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that an autopsy was conducted earlier in the day in Greenville.

Muse declined to be more specific about the wounds and the specific locations to the body, but he said Sellers had received multiple gunshot wounds.

As for whether a motive for the slaying has been established, Muse said the Sheriff’s Office believes there is one. Muse said he can’t release such information yet due to the ongoing probe.

Although Muse said no one has been arrested, he said there are several people who are considered persons of interest in the case.

Muse said he believes Sellers was reported missing on Wednesday morning.

He said the Sheriff’s Office received a tip about the location of Sellers’ vehicle and said the vehicle was near where Sellers’ body was found.

He said the Sheriff’s Office believes Sellers was shot where the body was found and not elsewhere and then put at that spot.

He said Sellers lived approximately three or four miles from where the body was found.

He said a firearm hasn’t been recovered.

Anyone with any information about the case is asked to call the sheriff’s dispatch at 641-7911 or Twin County Crime Stoppers at 977-1111.
