Rocky Mount police are trying to find out who fired a gunshot Monday outside the local Harris Teeter supermarket off Sunset Avenue.
Police Sgt. Brad Summerlin said the shot was fired from a handgun by a black man, after a fight reportedly broke out in the parking lot.
Summerlin said after the shot was fired, the people involved in the altercation got into a vehicle and left the scene, while the alleged shooter was seen running away from the parking lot area.
Police received the call at 7:59 p.m. and Summerlin said no one was injured.
Summerlin said multiple officers responded to the area in an attempt to find the people involved in the incident.
"Nobody was ever located," he said.
He said whether the alleged shooter was firing at anybody is too early in the probe to determine.
"All we got was information that a black male was the one seen with the handgun," he said.
As for whether a spent shell casing was recovered, he said some evidence was located, but he declined to say where the evidence was found.
Summerlin said police don't have a suspect or suspects in the case.
He said police in the past haven't had reports of trouble in that parking area.
"It's very quiet at Harris Teeter. You usually don't have any problems at all," he said.
