Gunfire impacted a Union Street family twice since the beginning of the year with a mother being injured in a shooting and her son later arrested as a suspect in a shooting death.

Khalil Jywon Davis, 18, has been charged with first degree murder in the Sunday homicide of 20-year-old Mikell Lamar Sheridan. Also charged were Tracy Lamont Collins Jr., 18; Shymond Kiheem Williams, 17; and a 15-year-old juvenile. All four suspects are being held without bond.

Davis and the other three suspects live in or frequent the Union Street neighborhood. Sheridan was from another neighborhood in Rocky Mount. There's no indication the shooting was gang related, said Sgt. Brad Summerlin, spokesman for the Rocky Mount Police Department.

"Mikell Sheridan was in the wrong place, wrong time and these suspects chose to do what they chose to do to him," Summerlin said.

At around 1:30 a.m. Jan. 2, Davis' mother, Chivonne Williams, was sitting in a car in front of a home on the 300 block of Union Street when bullets riddled the vehicle and grazed her head. The 36-year-old woman was transported to a local hospital.

Chivonne Williams wasn't the intended target, but it's not yet clear whether the shooter was gunning for Davis. Sheridan wasn't a suspect in the Jan. 2 shooting incident, Summerlin said.

Davis was released on parole Dec. 16 after serving a year and a half in prison on a conviction of possession of a firearm with a removed serial number, according to the state Public Safety Department.

Collins is awaiting trial on unrelated charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and larceny of a motor vehicle, according to the state criminal court calendar.

The four arrests were made by the department’s Homicide Unit, which was put together last year to focus on current murder cases.

Police are still investigating a double homicide that occurred Saturday night on Carroll Avenue. Kestler Rayo Bridgers, 31, and Torrey Tinell Hill, 39, were killed.
