A 36-year-old woman remains hospitalized after being struck by a bullet just after the New Year began.

The shooting was reported about 1:36 a.m. Tuesday. The victim, Chivonne Williams, was reportedly sitting in a car in front of a residence on the 300 block of Union Street when bullets struck both her head and the vehicle she was in.

Sgt. Brad Summerlin of the Rocky Mount Police Department characterized the wound as a graze but said the victim had been transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

A spokeswoman for Vidant Medical Center said late Wednesday that Williams remains hospitalized in fair condition.

Summerlin said Rocky Mount police are pursuing leads in the case, which is still under investigation. Though he would not speculate on a motive for the shooting, Summerlin said he feels the act was most likely intentional, though it is not clear if Williams was the intended victim.

“We do know that this was not a result of celebratory gunfire,” Summerlin said.
