An attempted theft from a motor vehicle resulted in an exchange of gunfire Saturday night on the 700 block of Cascade Avenue.
Rocky Mount police were called to the scene of a shots fired and possible breaking and entering about 9:17 p.m Saturday on Cascade Avenue. They arrived to find that a family member staying at a residence had spotted a suspect rummaging through the contents of one of his family member’s 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The witness shouted at the suspect, who then reportedly ran to the middle of the road, turned around and fired at the witness with a handgun. The witness in turn fired back, said Aletre Pittman, digital evidence management officer for the Rocky Mount Police Department.
Rocky Mount police recovered cartridges and casings from both weapons at the scene. Pittman said the witness voluntarily turned over his weapons for examination after the incident.
No one was wounded during the incident and no property damage was reported, Pittman said. The incident is still under investigation.
