A local pharmacy faced its own opioid crisis this week as a robbery Tuesday netted thieves more than 7,100 narcotic pills.

The robbery took place about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Walgreens on the 2600 block of Sunset Avenue. The pharmacy is a 24-hour store and was open at the time of the incident.

According to Rocky Mount police, a man approached a cashier at the store and threatened her with a chemical agent, which appeared to be a form of pepper spray, said Aletra Pittman, digital evidence management officer for the Rocky Mount Police Department. The suspect demanded that the cashier open the cash register and he grabbed the money.

At about the same time, two or more other suspects approached the pharmacist and demanded she hand over drugs as they instructed.

The robbers reportedly left with 7,165 pills, including 6,721 oxycodone in various dosages and 444 promethezine with codeine. The drugs have an estimated value of $108,810, according to a report from the Rocky Mount Police Department.

Pittman said no one was injured during the incident and the investigation into the case remains ongoing.
