Man charged with arson in hotel fire

Local police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to a fire at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Motel 6 on Wesleyan Boulevard.

Alvin Lee Whitaker, 51, was charged by the Rocky Mount Police Department with one count of arson and jailed in the Nash County Detention Center.

Whitaker has court dates in Halifax County on drug and traffic offenses and a pending traffic charge of speeding in Nash County. He's been previously connvicted of felonious restraint, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

Responding firefighters found a lot of smoke and a small fire on the first floor at the rear of the motel. The fire was put out and the situation under control in less than 10 minutes, officials aid.

Residents and guests left there rooms while firefighters cleared the motel of smoke.

Police took Whitaker into custody. Some police remained onsite until the scene was cleared by firefighters.
