Inmate charged with smuggling contraband into jail

An inmate checking into the Nash County Detention Center this week was charged with smuggling in contraband like drugs and cellphones.

Darcoa McCalop, 26, of Seed Farm Road in Whitakers, is charged with possession of cocaine; possessing a controlled substance in a jail; assault of a government official; possessing tobacco in jail; possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana; and possessing wireless communication devices in jail.

McCalop reported to the Nash County Detention Center to serve his arranged weekend probationary time as mandated by his probation sentence and was found to be in possession of two cellphones, a phone card, three cellphone chargers, eight bags of marijuana with a total of 58 grams, three bags of tobacco weighing 71.5 grams and one gram of cocaine, said Chief Deputy Brandon Medina of the Nash County Sheriff's Office.

McCalop received a $25,000 secured bond. His previous criminal convictions include assault inflicting serious injury, larceny from a person, carrying a concealed weapon and post release revocation, according to the N.C. Public Safety Department.
