A shooting on Monday that damaged a local occupied fitness center led to the arrest of two suspects.

Rocky Mount police received a report of shots fired at about 12:23 p.m. Monday near the Fit4Life Health Club in the Englewood Square Shopping Center on the 3000 block of Sunset Avenue. When police arrived, they discovered that a window in the business had been damaged by gunfire.

Cpl. Mike Lewis of the Rocky Mount Police Department said about 10 people were inside the health club at the time of the shooting but no one was wounded. Lewis said Wednesday that police feel the health club was not the target of the shots, but an unintended victim of a stray bullet from the shooting. The exact origin of the shots fired is still under investigation.

After an investigation and a search of the area, police were able to apprehend two men in connection with the crime on the 500 block of Charlotte Avenue. They said they also found two handguns in the suspects’ possession.

Sabian Nevon Davis, 17, of Rocky Mount was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen weapon and jailed in the Nash County Detention Center.

Marvin Powell also was arrested and charged with discharging a weapon into occupied property, discharging a weapon inside city limits, two counts of larceny of firearms and two counts of felony breaking and entering of a motor vehicle. These last charges were filed after police discovered that the weapons had been reported stolen from a vehicle about 9 a.m. Monday on the 3000 block of Woods Walk Way.

Powell’s age and place of residence were not available at presstime.

Lewis said no motive has yet to be uncovered and that the incident remains under investigation with more charges likely to be filed.

NOTE: This story has been updated based on new information to clarify that the health club does not appear to be the intended target of the shooting.
