The Tarboro Police Department released a statement late Monday detailing a recent arrest in a rape that took place earlier this month in Tarboro.

Tarboro police said they were contacted by an adult woman shortly after 9 am on Feb. 3 stating that she had been sexually assaulted by an acquaintance in a vacant house in the East Tarboro area of town. Based on these allegations, a report was filed and the case was forwarded to the department’s Investigations Division.

After conducting numerous interviews and collecting evidence, Detective Sgt. Brandon Richardson obtained warrants against Ernest Ray Pettaway, 60, of Tarboro.

Pettaway was arrested on Feb. 7 by Tarboro police and charged with first-degree forcible rape, first-degree forcible sex act and first-degree kidnapping. Pettaway was also arrested on charges stemming from a separate investigation, which included possession with intent to sell and deliver synthetic cannabinoid, sale of synthetic cannabinoid and delivery of synthetic cannabinoid.

He was jailed under a $300,000 bond in the Edgecombe County Detention Center.
