A Princeville man has been charged with the forcible rape of a 16-year-old girl, the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday.
The charge stems from an incident that occurred on Feb. 1, when the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a rape. A 16-year-old girl reported that she was forcibly raped while at an address on King Avenue in Princeville. The teen was taken to Vidant Edgecombe Hospital where a sexual assault exam was performed.
The Telegram does not publish the names of sexual assault victims.
The teen stated that the suspect was a relative known to her. As a result, Mervin Smith, 38, of the 600 block of King Avenue in Princeville, was arrested and charged with second-degree forcible rape. He was jailed under a $100,000 secured bond in the Edgecombe County Detention Center.
