A Rocky Mount officer on patrol spotted a car traveling at a high rate of speed at about 8:44 a.m. Saturday near the corner of Country Club Drive and Overton Road. The officer noticed that the car had extensive front-end damage as if it had been in a recent accident, checked the plates and discovered that the vehicle, a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, had been reported stolen Thursday from the 1000 block of Deerchase Drive.
The officer indicated for driver of the Elantra to stop. However, the driver led police on a brief high speed chase the the suburban neighborhood before coming to rest in the tree line of a resident’s yard. The driver, identified only as a black man wearing a black sweatshirt, then fled the scene on foot, eluding police.
