An 18-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday morning and charged in connection with the physical abuse of a baby girl.
Jahlil Saladean Plant was arrested just after midnight Wednesday morning on the 300 block of South Church Street. He was charged with offenses against family-felony child abuse and jailed under a $40,000 secured bond in the Nash County Detention Center.
Cpl. Brad Summerlin of the Rocky Mount Police Department said police could not release much information about the incident because of the circumstances and the age of the child. However, he did say the incident involved the aggravated assault of an infant under the age of one and that a family member reported the event. The child was taken to an unidentified medical facility, but Summerlin did not know the current status of the child. The Department of Social Services has been called in to assess the situation, Summerlin said.
According to police reports, the incident was reported to police about 10 p.m. Monday and occurred somewhere in Nash County. No information was available as to Plant’s relationship with the child.
