A local student’s car was damaged by gunfire earlier this week as he was leaving an apartment complex.

Rocky Mount police were working a checkpoint at about 10:10 p.m. Tuesday night near Jeffreys Road and heard gunshots nearby, said Rocky Mount police Cpl. Mike Lewis. They arrived at the 100 block of Jeffreys Cove at the Jeffreys Cove Apartments to find that an occupied Honda Civic had been struck by gunfire.

The driver of the car, Tres Xavier Clayborn, reported that he had been parked in the parking lot of Jeffreys Cove Apartments and had just entered the car to prepare to leave when the several bullets struck his car. Clayborn was not wounded in the incident.

Lewis said that Clayborn, 19, is from Winston-Salem and attends school in the area. However, the school he attends could not be confirmed.

Another car in the area, a 2012 Chevrolet 200 Touring car, also was reportedly damaged in the incident.
