A chance visit to a local convenience store Wednesday netted the arrest of an armed robbery suspect.
Cpl. Mike Lewis of the Rocky Mount Police Department said that a Rocky Mount detective entered the Kangaroo Express at about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday at 1830 North Wesleyan Blvd. to purchase an item and was hailed by the store clerk.
“The female store clerk told the detective that she had just been robbed at gunpoint and that the man had just left the store,” Lewis said.
The detective pursued the suspect and contacted other officers, who set up a perimeter around the store, Lewis said. The suspect was soon captured while he was hiding behind the nearby Executive Inn. Police also recovered a weapon and the cash that is believed to have been stolen from the store.
The suspect in the robbery has been identified as Howard Lewis Mangum Jr., 31, of Durham. Lewis said Mangum faces a robbery charge and may face additional charges once he has been processed. Bond had not yet been set as of presstime.
Lewis said the female clerk, who was working alone at the time of incident, was not harmed.
