Rocky Mount police are investigating a pair of commercial armed robberies that took place Wednesday night.

About 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, the Rocky Mount Police Department responded to a call at the L&L Food Store on the 5100 block of Hathaway Street in the Battleboro community. There they discovered that a male suspect in a black hoodie, black mask and a black clothing had held two clerks at gunpoint. The suspect robbed the store of an undetermined amount of cash.

Another male suspect was also seen at the time near the door of the store as the robbery occurred.

About 25 minutes later, another store nearby on the North Wesleyan Boulevard was also the victim of an armed robbery,

Rocky Mount police responded to the second incident about 10:05 p.m. Wednesday at the Kangaroo Express on the 1800 block of Wesleyan Boulevard. At this location, police discovered that one man was identified as participating in an armed robbery of a lone female store clerk. At this location, an undetermined amount of cash and a single pack of Newport cigarettes were stolen.

Cpl. Mike Lewis of the Rocky Mount police said that because of the proximity of time and place and the similar description of the suspects, the two robberies are being investigated for a possible link.

Oddly, a week earlier, on Dec. 20, the same Kangaroo Express was the object of a breaking and entering at about 2 a.m. In that incident, the front door of the store was badly damaged and a single pack of Newport cigarettes was stolen.
