A woman was struck by gunfire about 2 p..m. today in the parking lot at the Wal-Mart at Rocky Mount.

Cpl. Mike Lewis of the Rocky Mount Police Department said the woman was the unintended victim of an altercation that took place in the nearby Golden East Crossing mall parking lot.

Lewis said several individuals were engaged in an altercation in the mall parking lot and shots were fired as a result. One of the bullets apparently traveled across Jeffreys Road and struck the victim, who was standing in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

The victim, whose name and age have not been released, was transported to the hospital. Lewis described her wounds as non-life-threatening.
