Student wounded in shooting

A shooting Thursday afternoon sent a Rocky Mount teen to the hospital.
Police responded to a report of an injured person at 3:54 p.m. at Nash UNC Health Care. According to a news release sent Friday from the Rocky Mount Police Department, the victim was a 15-year-old Rocky Mount High School student who had been shot while playing baseball on the school’s grounds. The release stated the victim’s wounds were non-life-threatening.
It also stated the victim reportedly heard “a distant popping noise” and then “felt a pain in his neck,” leading him to be taken to the hospital to be checked out. A news release sent Friday from Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools stated the victim returned to the hospital later Thursday night for further treatment, adding that during his treatment, it was discovered the wound that he received was the result of a gunshot.
The police department’s release stated the shooting is under investigation. That investigation includes reports of hunters possibly being in a wooded area near the school on all terrain vehicles.
