A Rocky Mount man was killed Saturday in a shooting.
A Rocky Mount police officer on routine patrol heard gunshots in the area of Sunset Avenue near Dominick Drive, according to a news release from the Rocky Mount Police Department. The release stated that when the officer and other Rocky Mount police arrived, they found a victim suffering from what they called “wounds received in an assault.”
The victim, later identified as Levis Kirby Hicks, 29, of Rocky Mount, died from his wounds. Two other victims, identified as Jeremy Bell, 30, of Rocky Mount, and Antonio Lawrence, 30, of Sharpsburg, were also wounded and taken to Nash UNC Health Care. Hospital officials said the men were taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for further treatment.
According to the release, police believe the shooting was the result of an argument that happened at a nearby club, which was not named in the release. When asked the identity of the club where the alleged argument happened, Rocky Mount police Public Information Officer Cpl. Mike Lewis would not comment. He also said he could not comment on what caused the alleged argument.
Hicks’ death Saturday, which is being investigated as a homicide, is now the city’s twelfth homicide so far this year, and comes almost a month since Kenan Mercer’s death Sept. 15. Mercer was shot at the intersection of the 900 block of Walnut Street and the 800 block of South Pine Street.
No arrests have been made in Mercer’s case. Anyone with information about Mercer’s death should contact Rocky Mount police Lt. Seighman at 972-1455.
