An Edgecombe County man was killed late Thursday night after leading Sharpsburg police on a chase.
N.C. Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Jimmie Silver said Friday that Sharpsburg police saw a car driving without its headlights just after 10 p.m. in the town limits. When they tried to stop the car, the driver refused to stop, leading them on a short chase, Silver said.
He added the chase lasted only a short time before coming to an end on Sharp Road, which is between Elm City and Sharpsburg. When the driver, identified by Silver as Sean Bridges, drove onto the road, he allegedly lost control and was ejected from the car before it hit a tree.
Silver said an investigation into the case revealed that the car Bridges was driving, a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze, had recently been rented by Bridges’ roomate. He added it is believed that Bridges had taken the car without permission, but could not confirm if that was why Bridges fled after Sharpsburg police initially tried to stop him.
Silver stressed the investigation into the case is ongoing and added more information will be released after the investigation is over. Neither N.C. court records nor Department of Public Safety Records have any listings for Bridges.
