Nash County deputies on Monday arrested a suspect in last week’s stabbing death of Danny McCalston.

Joseph Anstead was arrested Monday afternoon in connection with McCalston’s death Sept. 18 in Castalia. According to a news release sent Monday evening, the arrest was made following what it called a “thorough investigation” into the case.

Anstead was charged with first-degree murder in the case before being jailed without bond in the Nash County Detention Center.

Deputies originally responded to the stabbing on Sept. 18 on the 7900 block of Edwards Road in reference to a report of a person who had been shot. When they arrived at the scene, they instead found McCalston suffering from multiple stab wounds. Nash Emergency Medical personnel pronounced McCalston dead when they arrived.

The agency’s release stated Anstead is scheduled to make his first appearance on the charge Sept. 26 in N.C. District Court in Nashville.
