A shooting Tuesday in Rocky Mount sent one person to the hospital.

Police responded to a report of a shooting with injury at 12:05 p.m. at the Cokey Road Supermarket and Grill at 1408 Cokey Road. Witnesses said a man working inside the store was shot in the hand by an unidentified assailant who fled on foot following the shooting.

The Edgecombe County Rescue Squad treated the victim at the scene before taking him to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Rocky Mount police and Edgecombe County deputies spread out across the area surrounding the store with at least one K-9 unit to search for the suspect.

Rocky Mount police Cpl. Brad Summerlin said Tuesday afternoon that no arrest has been made in the case despite law enforcement officers’ efforts. He added robbery is believed to have been the motive for the shooting but would not say if the suspect got away with any money.

One woman who lives near the store said on condition of anonymity that she and her 10-year-old son had moved to Cokey Road only four months ago from Sunset Avenue and that Tuesday’s shooting shook her.

“This shooting gives me a lot of concern,” the woman said. “It gives me concern not only for my son, but also for the other kids in the area.”

The woman said while she didn’t know the victim well, she thought he was “a nice dude” and “respectable.” She said the man would often ask how her son was doing when she went to the store.
