A pair of aggravated assaults Wednesday sent two people to the hospital.
Police responded to the first assault at 9 a.m. at a house on the 1500 block of Springbrook Drive. They said two men had gotten into a verbal altercation only minutes earlier, adding the altercation turned physical.
The victim was taken to Nash UNC Health Care and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Hospital officials said Wednesday the victim was released after being treated. The alleged assailant in the case was identified as Luther Smith, 35, of Rocky Mount.
Police said Smith was charged with misdemeanor assault in connection to the case. N.C. court records show Smith is scheduled to appear on the charge Sept. 11 in the N.C. District Court in Tarboro.
Police responded to the second assault at 11:12 p.m. at the intersection of the 200 block of North Howell Street and West Thomas Street. They said when they arrived, they found a 47-year-old woman suffering from wounds consistent with a physical assault, adding she had allegedly also been shot by a bb gun.
The victim was taken to Nash UNC Health Care for treatment. Hospital officials said the victim was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for further treatment. She was listed in serious condition Wednesday at the facility.
