The state's largest gymnastics championships are scheduled to take place later this month at the Rocky Mount Event Center.

Opened in October, the Event Center has hosted successful basketball, volleyball and cheer and dance events. Such events bring increased numbers of visitors to downtown Rocky Mount, said Ashley Pittman, marketing manager for the Event Center.

And later this month, Team NC Gymnastics, which governs Athletic Amateur Union Gymnastics in the state, will hold its state championships at the Event Center, Pittman said. The event is scheduled for April 26 through April 28.

AAU Gymnastics started in North Carolina in 2008 with only 100 members from two Charlotte area clubs. Now, there are more than 1,000 members including judges, club directors, event directors and youth and adult gymnasts stretching from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean, according to information from the union.

Team NC offers positive, friendly competitive league with no mobility or eligibility standards, allowing gymnasts of all ability levels to gain a competitive gymnastics experience by competing with other gymnasts of like-ability, said NC AAU Gymnastics District Chairwoman Jessica Harris.

"This will be our biggest state championship to date hosted at Rocky Mount Event Center, with 865 participants from 29 gymnastics clubs from all parts of North Carolina such as Charlotte, Asheville, Carolina Beach, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Hickory, Lake Norman, Gastonia, Raleigh and more," Harris said. "This event is looking to bring approximately 3,000 people to Rocky Mount for the weekend. Within the first week, we filled our hotel blocks at Holiday Inn and Hampton Inn.”

March saw more than 100 basketball teams visit downtown. Various sports events at the Event Center brought in more than 7,000 outside visitors to Rocky Mount.

"The attendees stayed at the local hotels in the area and were able to enjoy a taste of Southern hospitality while visiting Rocky Mount," Pittman said.
