People who like purchasing food grown locally and regionally are going to get their chance to do so this weekend and into autumn.
That is because the Farmers Market’s 2019 season is set to start this weekend.
“About anything that you feel like you may need that you need to get from the grocery store you can find here,” said Maurine Brown, manager of the Farmers Market.
The Farmers Market is going to be open from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday and at the same times on Saturdays all the way until the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
The Farmers Market is located at 1006 Peachtree St., just southwest of the Rocky Mount Mills campus.
Comers are not only going to find vegetable vendors, but vendors offering baked goods, crafts, eggs, kettle corn, meats and seafood.
Brown estimates there are going to be approximately 40 vendors on opening day.
She also said the local Joint Veterans Committee is going to have a flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. as part of opening day.
During the produce season, fans of the Farmers Market also are going to be able to shop there from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesdays in June, July and August.
Brown emphasized there’s two reasons the Farmers Market is important.
“You’re supporting the local economy, number one,” she said.
Additionally, she many small vendors cannot afford a brick-and-mortar building to have a business.
“So this is the opportunity for them to have a small business and have a venue to sell the products that they produce for a small investment,” she said.
The Farmers Market dates back to 2005 and had from the start been led by Jimmy Winters, who retired last year.
Brown had established the Zebulon Farm Fresh Market and had worked there approximately 4½ years as manager.
Brown said someone called and advised her the management position at the farmers market in Rocky Mount was available.
And she said, “It was a good opportunity for me.”
She began at the start of March as manager.
