Rocky Mount Mills is launching a new arts series that organizers say promises to provide diverse cultural experiences for the public.
The Art at the Mills series begins Saturday with a free performance at 3:30 p.m. by the African American Dance Ensemble of Durham — the first group to perform in the newly renovated Power House event space. The dance troupe will host a dance and music workshop for students at 11:30 a.m.
“We are thrilled to be a partner in bringing world-class arts experiences to Eastern North Carolina,” said Evan Covington Chavez, development manager at Rocky Mount Mills. “Our hope is that this series will help cross boundaries in our community and serve to build common ground around the arts.”
Dance performances, workshops and an artist residency program are on tap for the spring. The hope of organizers is that attendees to the events will actively engage with the art and the artists, whether through dance or conversation.
Event coordinators are collaborating with established arts representatives from throughout North Carolina to create a robust calendar. First Friday exhibitions will be curated in partnership with the local Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences, while Raleigh-based artist collective the Visual Art Exchange will collaborate for the ongoing Artist in Residency program.
Entrepreneur and community leader Nicole Oxendine, whose work focuses on empowering communities through dance, is helping to organize the series.
“I am excited to see the amazing love of the arts that is here in Rocky Mount,” Oxendine said. “Art at the Mills will enable folks to make concrete connections to the arts, and give young people experience and exposure that can have a positive impact on their lives.”
Videographer Jade Wilson begins her residency on Monday and during her tenure will engage the community in conversations where the participants are encouraged to listen with the intent of hearing rather than the intent to respond immediately.
