A contractor for the state Department of Transportation will temporarily close a section of Independence Drive starting at 8 a.m. Monday as part of a project to widen two miles of North Wesleyan Boulevard.
Crews will install a sewer line and a storm drain under Goose Branch Crossing near the intersection with U.S. 301 Bypass during the closure, which should last about six weeks.
Independence Drive will be closed to through traffic between the boulevard and Benvenue Road. Customers may access businesses on Independence Drive by entering off Benvenue Road.
NCDOT awarded a $28 million contract to PLT Construction of Wilson in 2017 to add a lane in each direction to Wesleyan Boulevard between May Drive and Benvenue Road. The project also replaced a bridge on Sunset Avenue that reopened in December. The overall widening project is expected to be completed by May 2020.
