Registration is open for this year's Rocky Mount Citizens Academy.

The academy is designed to acquaint residents with city government operations through interactive programs and education. Students may expect to meet with personnel in departments such as but not limited to, Police, Fire, Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Human Resources and Human Relations.

The academy is an initiative to increase awareness and foster positive relations between city residents and city staff, said Loretta Braswell, coordinator for the Citizens Academy.

“This gives citizens an opportunity to not only learn more about what the city does, but citizens come together who never knew each other and begin to network,” Braswell said. “They become ambassadors for the city and are more intimate with city government.”

Sessions will begin March 7 and will run 6-9 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays. The 11-week program will culminate with a May 16 graduation ceremony at the Booker T. Theater.

Interested participants must register by Thursday.

More than 100 people have graduated from the academy since 2010. For more information, call 972-1354.
