Mall shoppers in Rocky Mount on Saturday were wowed by model trains rolling through mountainous terrain with towering trestles, towns, industries, rail yards and passenger stations.

The Golden East Railroad Modelers have been rolling along since a couple of weeks before Christmas.

The group used to run its engines out of the Antique Barn in Wilson but the owner recently retired.

Looking for a place to land, the group found a junction at Golden East Crossing.

"In this real estate market we found the mall to rent friendly. It's a win/win for us and the mall," said Martin Kuttner, the nonprofit group's treasurer.

While there's plenty of miniature trains, trucks and scenery to gawk at, the group plans to have much move available by April or May.

Kuttner said whatever someone does to make a living during the week, being a part of the Modelers gives folks a chance to run boxcars down the tracks.

Kuttner got involved with model trains because his son loved them so much.

"I've been doing it for three years, my son's been into it for a dozen years," Kuttner said.

The group also may look at building seasonal models and holding modeling classes.

The trains run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  every Saturday in the storefront next to JCPenny.
