Sozo Ministries will present “An Evening of Jazz” at 7 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Imperial Centre for the Arts.

The concert will feature world-renowned jazz musician Yoron Israel — drummer, percussionist, composer, bandleader and educator. Israel will be sharing previews of music from his upcoming eighth recording, “New Dreams,” during the concert.

Israel's exciting and tasteful drumming along with his compositional talents are spotlighted throughout his other recordings, “Visions — The music of Stevie Wonder,” “Basic Traneing,” a musical tribute to the legacy of the iconic John Coltrane, “Chicago,” “Live at the Blue Note,” “A Gift for You” and his latest release “This Moment — Live in Boston.”

Israel currently serves as co-chairman and professor of the percussion department at Berklee College of Music and pastor of music/arts at Destiny Life Center International in Boston, Mass. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Otis Clay, Shirley Caesar, Kenny Burrell, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, Abbey Lincoln, Ahmad Jamal, Clark Terry, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutchinson and many more.

He conducts workshops in Italy, Japan, China, Spain, Africa and throughout the United States.

Admission to the concert is $20. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Imperial Centre or by visiting the Imperial Centre’s website. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to support three local nonprofit organizations — the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tar River Region, Peacemakers and Williford Elementary School.

Sozo Minitries’ community-based nonprofit program has been involved in empowering residents of the community since 1994. Initially, Sozo was launched to raise awareness to prevent risks for youth in the areas of health disparities, delayed sexual activity and HIV/STI transmission — that scope has expanded to include other areas that promote intellectual stimulation and cultural awareness.
