Children in the Twin Counties will have the opportunity to spruce up their hairstyles for free this weekend as Edgecombe Community College offers free Holiday Cuts for Kids.
The event, which is sponsored by the Edgecombe Community College Barbering Club, will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Cosmetic Arts Building at the Rocky Mount campus at 225 Tarboro St. In addition to free haircuts, kids will receive a free gift and pizza as long as supplies last.
“We like to offer this event before Christmas because kids will be attending holiday events and family gatherings where a lot of pictures will be taken. Giving them a nice, fresh haircut makes those events more special,” said Rufus McKoy, barbering instructor at Edgecombe Community College.
Though the Holiday Cuts for Kids event is designed primarily for boys and young men ages 5 to 16, McKoy said girls with natural hair who just need a basic trim will be accommodated as well. Boys can get a variety of styles from basic haircuts to fades to styles incorporating simple designs, McKoy said.
Minors must be accompanied by an adult and have permission from a parent or guardian to get a haircut. Haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
Mckoy said the event is becoming a holiday tradition for the college.
“We have been offering the free Holiday Cuts for Kids since 2013 but the event seems to get bigger every year,” he said. “Last year, we had about 93 kids show up.”
Far from being a charity event, the Holiday Cuts for Kids events is mutually beneficial for everyone involved, McKoy said.
“This event benefits Edgecombe Community College and the students in the barbering program,” he said. “It gives students a chance to interact with the community and to hone their skills. It also allows the college a chance to give back to the community, which supports us throughout the year.”
