Active older adults ages 65 or older can now participate in aerobic exercises for free at the Rocky Mount Senior Center as part of the new SilverSneakers initiative.

SilverSneakers is a fitness program for adults 65 or older that comes free with qualifying health plans.

"SilverSneakers is very important,” said Brian Harrell, manager of the Rocky Mount Senior Center. “It provides access to health and wellness activities for older adults, which for some may not be possible."

The program has teamed up with health insurance agencies including AARP, Aetna, Coventry Health Care, Gateway Health Care, Medicare Assured, United Health Care, Humana and WellCare to provide free fitness options.

People who obtain a SilverSneakers card can use it for water aerobics, senior stretch, body craze, which is a low-impact routine designed to strengthen and tone the body, YogaLike, which is a core-strengthening routine, Zumba Gold and line dancing at the Senior Center.

The card also allows free access to the fitness center and pool.

Once SilverSneakers members receive cards from their insurance agencies, they will also have to fill out a registration form at the Senior Center.
