TARBORO — A Halloween-themed 5k race and fun run raised $30,000 for the Edgecombe Cancer Support Foundation, which assists patients at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital.
Pat Petruzziello, the race director, said the rain Friday made Saturday the perfect day for a race.
"Numbers were a little down," Petruzziello said. "The weather kept some folks away. But the location was fantastic. I feel like more people hung out afterwards, socializing and eating from the food truck."
The 6th annual Run For Your Life took participants from the Tarboro Brewing Co. on North Main Street — which acted as the race headquarters and starting point — around Tarboro on roads and nature trails and even an old farm.
The family-friendly event offered a costume contest presented by Vidant Multispecialty Clinic. The fun run was sponsored by Providence Bank.
The foundation's mission is to financially assist Edgecombe County residents being treated for cancer.
Organizers said many people assume the needs of cancer patients are being met. But given the changing times and the rising cost of health insurance, treatment costs and cost of living increases, a lot of patients are in true financial need.
All of the money raised by the event will help support cancer patients in Edgecombe County, Petruzziello said.
Being diagnosed with cancer is like having an individual natural disaster. Patients are faced with many hardships, including financial stress. The people of Edgecombe County wish to help their friends and neighbors and want to help make that fight for survival a little easier, according to information provided by the foundation.
"We've received incredible support from the town and Tarboro merchants," Petruzziello said.
Anyone who didn't make it to the run but would like to support the cause can make a tax-deductible contribution by sending checks to Edgecombe Cancer Support Foundation, PO BOX 1582, Tarboro, NC 27886. Donations are also taken online at the foundation's website.
