Here comes the funk.

Grammy award-winner George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic are set to “tear the roof off” the Rocky Mount Event Center when they perform a free show at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 to celebrate the grand opening of the center.

“To say that we are excited about the Rocky Mount Event Center’s opening would be an understatement,” said City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney. “We appreciate all of the hard work, planning and thought it took to make the Event Center a reality. This is another step showing that Rocky Mount truly is the ‘Center of It All.’ We feel it is important that our citizens are the first to tour the building and enjoy a night of free entertainment, and we look forward to what the Event Center will do for the growth and stability of Rocky Mount and its residents.”

The event kicks off at 4:30 p.m. with opening acts the Tams and Deep Fried Funk.

Clinton, a North Carolina native, is the leader of the 1970s funk act that produced classics including “Give Up the Funk” and “One Nation Under a Groove." The group has recorded more than 40 R&B hit singles, three No. 1 singles and a trio of platinum albums.

Clinton was a 1997 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and 2009 inductee into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.

The Tams, a staple at Rocky Mount events, have roots dating back to the 1960s. The band performs a mix of R&B, Soul and Beach Music.

Deep Fried Funk formed in 1996 and is a special-event band formed by three-time Grammy nominee Jordy Hill.

The Family Fun Zone will offer games and activities for children. The first 75 people will receive a free hot dog and soft drink.

WTVD ABC 11 Chief Meteorologist Chris Hohmann will serve as the master of ceremonies. U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-1st District, will give remarks.

The Event Center is a 165,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility that includes eight basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts, climbing walls, a ropes course, meeting rooms, banquet space and more.

The venue is scheduled to hold local, regional and national sports tournaments as well as concerts, entertainment events, corporate conferences and trade shows.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the Main and Goldleaf street entrance. Doors will open at 4 p.m. Parking is free; shuttles will be available, according to information provided by Jessie Nunery, the city's media relations specialist.
