Small Shops Marketplace, which bills itself as the originator of the “micro store” concept, will be celebrating the opening of its first location on Saturday.
The grand opening will start at 11 a.m. and continue until 7 p.m. There will be a live radio remote, prizes, giveaways, a bouncy castle, a food truck, ice cream and other attractions.
“Small Shops Marketplace is an exciting concept that will allow nearly anyone to open their own business, with no long-term commitment, no employees, almost no paperwork and a total upfront cost of as little as $160,” founder Fred George said.
Small Shops Marketplace, which is set to open 11 more locations in the coming years, will open its first store in Rocky Mount at 2916 Sunset Ave. in Englewood Square. This Marketplace will open with 70 “micro stores,” retail shops that are abound 80 square feet.
“Shop space in this size range,” George said, “allows us to rent a space for $5 to $6 per day, putting business ownership within the reach of most anyone.”
Current shops in the Small Shops Marketplace include furniture, clothing, restaurant equipment, a golf shop, computer repair, paintings and decorations, Dixie Belle Paints, Christmas trees, baked goods, antiques, mattresses and kettle corn.
“We have folks from every walk of life opening shops here,” Manager Amber Ledbetter said, “from stay-at-home moms to retirees to families with kids where both parents work full-time and the whole family is pitching in.”
