Schools to close ahead of storm

Area public schools are closing early on Wednesday and will not meet for the remainder of the week.

“After consulting with Sheriff Keith Stone and in anticipation of Hurricane Florence and the potential fall-out, Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools will alter our regular schedule,” Superintendent Dr. Shelton Jefferies announced earlier today.

Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools will  operate on an early release schedule on Wednesday and school is canceled for Thursday and Friday.

Edgecombe County Public Schools issued a similar statement.

“In order to ensure the safety of our Edgecombe County Public Schools school community, we have been working in close cooperation with Edgecombe County Emergency Management as we prepare for Hurricane Florence,” Susan Hoke, communications coordinator for the school district. said today.

Edgecombe County Public Schools will operate on a three-hour early dismissal schedule on Wednesday. All afternoon activities previously scheduled for Wednesday afternoon are canceled. Schools will be also be closed for students and staff on Thursday and Friday.

All three area colleges have also announced closures in advance of the storm.

All classes will be canceled at N.C. Wesleyan College on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. All weekend classes will also be canceled.

Classes at Edgecombe Community College are also canceled for Wednesday. However, college employees are expected to report to work from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday. The college will be shut down down on Thursday and Friday for students and staff. Weekend classes are also canceled.

Nash Community College and the Betsy B. Currin Child Development Center will operate on a normal schedule until 5 p.m. Wednesday but will close on Thursday and Friday. Weekend classes are also canceled.
