Volunteers are gathering at the end of the month to build a new playground at Aycock Park.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, the Rocky Mount Housing Authority, the city of Rocky Mount and community residents will join KaBOOM! on Aug. 29 to transform an empty site at Aycock Park into a kid-designed, state-of-the-art playground in just six hours.

“The new playground will help make play the easy choice for kids and families in Rocky Mount,” said Caroline Finnell, a KaBoom! spokeswoman.

The current playground at Aycock Park was installed in 1998 and is in dire need of replacement. The KaBOOM! grant, with funding from Blue Cross NC, has given the city and Housing Authority the opportunity to replace the playground and make a difference in the community, said Melissa Biediger of Blue Cross NC.

Kids from the surrounding community came together in July to draw their dream playground. The playground is based on their drawings and will provide more than 1,900 kids in Rocky Mount with a great, safe place to play, according to information released by Jessie Nunery, media relations specialist for the city's Office of Communications and Marketing.

This playground is part of a broader effort led by Blue Cross NC and KaBOOM! to ensure communities have great places for kids and families. It will be the 11th build by Blue Cross NC. Through this partnership, Blue Cross NC and KaBOOM! are creating an oasis where kids feel valued and loved and where their potential is supported, nurtured and celebrated.

The schedule for the day is:

■ 9:30 to 10 a.m. kick-off ceremony;

■ noon to 2 p.m. best viewing of playground construction;

■ 2 to 3:30 p.m. final construction phase;

■ 3:30 to 4 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Volunteers need to gather at Aycock Park at 1200 Aycock St. in Rocky Mount.
