The former 24,113-square-foot space of the Bed Bath & Beyond in Golden East Crossing mall has been filled by a new national retail chain tenant.

Hendon Properties in Atlanta, Ga., welcomed Los Angeles-based Fallas Stores as the latest merchant in the mall. Fallas is now one of the anchor tenants in front of Golden East along with Texas-based Conn’s HomePlus, which opened in April 2016. Hendon Properties said terms of the lease for Fallas are undisclosed.

Fallas is a family-owned company that was established by Joseph Fallas in 1962 as a single downtown Los Angeles store that falls under the umbrella of National Stores Inc., which includes Fallas Paredes, Fallas Discount Stores, Fallas Kid Stores, Falas Puerto Rico and Factory 2U.

National Stores is owned by Joseph’s son, Michael Fallas, who is also CEO of the company. The Rocky Mount location is one of more than 350 stores across the country. Fallas stores offer a big selection of quality brand-name and private-label clothing for men, women, boys, girls, juniors, infants and toddlers along with lingerie, shoes and home decor.

Sheena Jerman, general manager and leasing manager of Golden East Crossing mall, said Hendon Properties felt that Fallas was an ideal fit that could help draw more foot traffic to the mall.

“Fallas brings more choices and a diverse merchandise mix to the Rocky Mount community,” Jerman said. “Our goal is to serve all of the customers in our trade area, and we believe that Fallas helps us do so.”

Jerman wouldn’t say whether any more potential tenants are coming to the mall but added Hendon Properties is working with other merchants that it hopes will open in the near future.

“Hendon Properties has several different methods of finding new tenants,” Jerman said. “We tap existing retailer relationships from other centers in our portfolio and always seek to develop new ones at industry trade shows and networking events. Our leasing managers and directors work relentlessly to find major retailers and business owners that complement the Rocky Mount community.”

Jerman said the sign for the Fallas store should be going up soon. The store is currently hiring and anyone seeking employment can go into the store during operational hours to apply.

Upcoming events at the mall include the annual Back to School Block Party from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 17 with a guest appearance by Disney actress Trinitee Stokes. Jerman said the mall is looking to give away 375 backpacks filled with supplies to local students.
