A Rocky Mount police officer was killed Saturday night in a collision with a commercial vehicle.

Officer Christopher Driver was on duty in his patrol car traveling on South Church Street at 10:35 p.m. when his car crashed into a commercial vehicle in the same lane, said Cpl. Brad Summerlin, public information officer for the Rocky Mount Police Department.

The State Highway Patrol Recon Unit was called from Raleigh to investigate the fatal wreck.

“At this time, it is still under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol,” Summerlin said.

Officers from Rocky Mount and Sharpsburg responded to the scene.

Interim Police Chief Willie Williams said the department is saddened by the loss.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the officer involved,” Williams said.

Driver has been with the department since 2013.
