Rocky Mount is celebrating America's 242nd birthday a day early. The city's annual Independence Day celebration is scheduled from 6-9:30 p.m. July 3 at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.

The celebration will include inflatables for young children, a pair of live bands and a nighttime fireworks display by Bay Fireworks Co.

The night begins with the Rhythm Express Band, followed by the Hip Pocket Band.

Food and vendor applications are still available at rockymountnc.gov, said Sheila Long, the city's supervisor of recreation services.

“It's a Rocky Mount tradition that brings everyone together with their families to enjoy live music, fellowship and kids’ activities,” Long said. “We close out the night with our patriotic fireworks display. It's a great kickoff to the celebration of our country's independence.”

The event is presented by PNC, Life 103.1 F.M., The Nashville Graphic, U.S. Cellular, WHIG-TV and hosted by the city of Rocky Mount.

Admission to the event is free. For more information, call 252-972-1266.
