A 20- through 40-year-old in the Rocky Mount area will be the recipient of a new honor this summer as the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce recently announced its People’s Choice Award for an Outstanding Young Professional.

It’s the first time the organization has given out such an award and is thought of as a chance to recognize a sometimes overlooked age range in the Twin Counties.

“The reason we did it this year is that we wanted to start making sure we valued our up-and-coming leaders,” said Desiree Dolberry, a member of the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce and the small business committee. “We know young professional groups are doing great service work. We wanted to shine light on those people and start recognizing them — make sure they stay and grow with the area.”

The deadline to nominate someone for the award, which, according to a press release, should be a person with a business background and a track record of community involvement, is May 15, Dolberry said. To nominate someone, call 252-973- 1202 or email Dolbery at ddolberry@rockymountchamber.org.

From there, the small business committee of about a dozen-and-a-half people will narrow down the list to the top five. The winner will be chosen on June 28 during the annual Small Business Celebration, where there will be a live vote at the event.

“With everything happening around Rocky Mount,” Dolberry said, “we thought the idea was good timing.”
