The Wright’s Center annual gala celebration is set for Friday.

The 29th anniversary event is scheduled to be held 6 p.m. at the The Impact Center with keynote speaker Dr. William B. Bynum Jr., a Rocky Mount native and current president of Jackson State University in Mississippi.

Bynum is a graduate of Davidson College, where he was a student-athlete, and he holds a doctorate from Duke University, where he was a Duke Endowment Fellow. He has 30 years of experience in higher education.

The nonprofit center provides adult day care services to elders, disabled adults, veterans and their families, said Doris Howington, the center's executive director.

The gala's fundraising goal this year is $50,000. The annual event is a major undertaking to raise funds to balance the center’s budget during the second half of the fiscal year, Howington said.

“Your support is invaluable to us,” Howington said. “We thank you for your consideration and your investment in the lives of the people we serve.”

The center's services are especially beneficial for full-time caregivers, enabling them to maintain employment outside of the home without worrying about the care of their loved ones, Howington said.

“We provide a safe and nurturing environment for loved ones with chronic illnesses, including those with Alzheimer’s, other dementia related illnesse, and mental or physical disabilities,” Howington said.

The center's planned program addresses the nutritional, educational, recreational, social and health needs of participants. Supporting the center is an investment in the quality care provided to participants as well as the peace of mind offered to their full-time caregivers, Howington said.

Somewhere between 400-450 guests are expected to attend the gala this year. A silent auction begins at 6 p.m. Program begins at 6:30 p.m. Individual Tickets are $35 each; sponsorship are available. Call 252-442-8363.
