Have a hobby, skill or a passion? Well, it is time to showcase those abilities.
Monday marked the two-week warning for registration for this year’s Down East Senior Games.
The Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department will host the 35th annual games in conjunction with five counties. The final day to register is April 2.
The games, scheduled for April 30 to May 22, are open to anyone age 50 and older who live in Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Northampton or Wilson counties. The popular event will offer five categories in which to compete.
Seniors can choose from sports, literary arts, performing arts, visual arts and heritage arts. Thousands have attended the games in previous years. And there’s something for everyone.
The athletic competitions range from more stationary events like cornhole, horseshoes, shuffleboard and table tennis to athletic endeavors like basketball, track events, swimming and pickleball.
Essay writing, short stories and poetry fall under the literary arts category, while dance, cheerleading, instrumental and comedy performances are also offered. The visual arts category includes drawings, photography and sculpting, while heritage arts scratch the itch of those interested in knitting, needlework and basket weaving.
Athletes will compete for awards in their own sex and age categories in five-year increments of 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95-99 and 100-plus.
Registration can be completed by picking up an application at local senior centers or by calling 252-972-1564.
