Deputy killed in car crash

The N.C. Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate a two-car crash in which a deputy with the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office was killed about 6:20 p.m. Sunday.

Mary Collins, office assistant at the N.C. Highway Patrol station, said the deputy, David Lee’Sean Manning, 24, was traveling south on N.C. 111 in Tarboro when he went to pursue a vehicle traveling north on N.C. 111. 

Collins said the deputy proceeded to turn around in the patrol car in pursuit of the vehicle. Collins said the deputy drove around a curve, crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle head on. Authorities said he was killed in the crash. Collins said she is unaware whether anyone else was injured following the crash.

Detective Lt. E.W. Muse Jr. of the criminal investigations division of the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office told the Telegram that Edgecombe County Sheriff Clee Atkinson is planning to conduct a press release later today in regard to the incident.
