A 21-year-old driver was charged in a fatal crash that killed an 18-year-old female passenger from Tarboro on Saturday near the U.S. 64 Alternate bridge in Nashville.

Trooper Fred Demuth of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Anna Marie Alonso-Palacios died at the scene of the accident. Demuth said Victor Lopez Alvarez, who is listed in stable condition at WakeMed in Raleigh, was charged with careless and reckless driving and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Demuth said Alvarez was driving eastbound on U.S. 64 in a 2002 Acura when he lost control of the car, which ran up an embankment, flipped over and struck a tree about 3:11 p.m. Saturday. Demuth said Alvarez was ejected from the car, while Alonso-Palacios, who wasn’t ejected, was killed in the crash.

Demuth said speed was a factor in the cause of the accident and both Alvarez and Alonso-Palacios weren’t wearing seatbelts. He added alcohol wasn’t a factor.
